My friend and fellow Ohio writer Jim Beard and I have spent the past year celebrating the tenth anniversary of Flinch Books, the small press we co-founded in 2015. Flinch has been, among other things, the home of my Midnight Guardian series and Jim’s Sgt. Janus series, along with several anthologies featuring stories by a host of other writers.
We recently had an opportunity to take a look back at the whole Flinch story on the Suit Up! podcast hosted by Terrance Layhew (who is himself a talented writer of swashbuckling adventures that are worth checking out).
In this episode, Terrance walks us through the genesis of Flinch, our approach to writing and publishing pulp fiction in the 21st century, our plans for the future (or at least the ones we’re willing to talking about without giving away too much of the good stuff), and the little-known story behind the name “Flinch.”
Check out the podcast and join us on the look backward – but rest assured that we intend to keep moving forward in 2026 and beyond.
